Susan Boyle and Julia Child - don't they look alike? |
Today would have been Julia Child's 99th birthday. As a tribute to this eccentrically brilliant woman, here are some of her famous lines:
The only time to eat diet food is while you're waiting for your steak to cook.
The only real stumbling block is fear of failure. In cooking, you've got to have a what-the-hell attitude.
If you're afraid of butter, use cream.
Life itself is the proper binge.
You must have discipline to have fun.
Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all.
Eating is the secret to cooking well.
Find something you're passionate about and keep tremendously interested in it.
How can a nation be called great if its bread tastes like kleenex?
Fat gives things flavour.
You never forget a beautiful thing you have made. Even after you eat it, it stays with you - always.
Nothing is too much trouble if it turns out the way it should.
You'll never know everything about anything, especially something you love.
I was 32 when I started cooking up. Up until then, I just ate.
I was 37 years old and still discovering who I was.
No one is born a great cook. Everyone learns by doing.
Maybe the cat has fallen into the stew or....the cake has collapsed. If the food is truly vile, then the cook must simply grit her teeth and bear it with a smile, and learn from her mistakes.
The waiters carried themselves with a quiet joy, as if their entire mission in life was to make their customers feel comfortable and well tended.
Happy Birthday, Julia!
